A few months ago, I stumbled across Elvis costello's new talk show. The guest that evening was President Bill Clinton.
I don't know if it was the choice of guest that evening or the fact
that it was Elvis Costello or that I was home alone with nothing to do but something froze my hand on the remote.
I'm glad I did.
I don't know if you've had a chance to watch an episode but I think it ranks as one of the best talk shows I have ever seen. The questions that Mr Costello asks are thoughtful and go beyond the typical questions asked by a talk show host.
Spectacle brings me back to my University days where I spent many an hour talking about music with my housemate. One if our most memorable conversations was the night we discussed the impact if music on politics and I said "The world would be a better place if it were run by musicians."
Those who were studying other disciplines disagreed and a rivetting debate ensued. I held my ground but was ultimately defeated by consensus.
Over a decade later, one of the men who was once considered the most powerful man in the world, agreed with me.
Mr. Costello asked President Clinton if more administrations would benefit from greater musical knowledge.
His reply "Yes." He went on to state that musical awareness makes you more sensitive to the things others overlook. He said that you can't be a good musician if you can't see more than the notes. You see things in a different way even if you're not a great musician, you see things in a different way and the different perspective helps you be able to read things in others that can get overlooked.
If only I had all those non-believers on speed dial so I could say "I told you so." :-)
